Vintage 20" French Altar Crucifix of Gilded Gold & Bronze Tabletop with Sunburst Finial, Ornate Details, Mary, St John Evangelist, Skull. Measures 20" tall and 5 1/4" wide. Bright gold gilted metal. Crucifix has arrows at each of its points. A large golden sunburst spray behind His head with a gold filigree medallion and ruby colored cabochon. i believe Jesus, Mary and St. John the Evangelist are a bronze cast. They have a gold halo behind their heads. The vine Mary stands on is a little loose. Between Mary and St. John is a bronze metal skull and bones Below his feet is a gold tone skull and bones metal piece. Tradition says that Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified, is the burial place of Adam, the first man. The skull and crossbones represent Adam's bones being washed by Christ's blood, symbolizing redemption. In the middle of the lower stem is a golden column with bronze metal floral roping. The bottom base has four footed discs. The stem is very ornate with many different embossing details. No repairs, dents, corrosion or damage. A very beautiful and detailed piece for your prayer corner. Please take time to look at the pictures to admire the detail and symbolism of this special Altar Crucifix. There are a few spots on the silver tin that have oxidized causing an aqua patina. The crucifix is also lightweight due to the silver tin used.
