22" Vintage Wooden Carved Standing Altar Crucifix Pewter tone Cast Metal Corpus, accents, Skull & bones (Golgotha). From 1800s. Measures 22 1/4" tall, 11" wide and 2 1/2" in depth. The crucifix is wood with the three ends capped in metal with a filigreed tips. The INRI sign and he corpus is also metal. There is a metal sunburst halo behind His head. At the bottom of the cross is a metal skull and bones. Tradition says that Golgotha, where Jesus was crucified, is the burial place of Adam, the first man. The skull and crossbones represent Adam's bones being washed by Christ's blood, symbolizing redemption. The cross is screwed onto the base; however, the Corpus, sign and crossbones are welded on. The bottom half of the crucifix is a half round carved wood with two types of metal buttons on the tiers. The crucifix sits on three small round wooden feet. This piece is in very good condition with no repairs, chips, breakage or chips. A very beautiful and detailed piece for your prayer corner.
